The research project has three main features. Firstly, from the perspective of research, the project examines the limitation of preceding grand narrative framework such as cold war and nationalism, and focuses on the perspective of immigrants, which takes immigration experiences as major subject with other references, so as to draw close to the must-passed trans-national, trans-context and trans-cultural process of Chinese’s immigration to the south, and their experiences of forming nation identity through interactions with other ethnic groups. Secondly, based on the perspective of immigrants, the project does not apply the current two-point immigration research inclination, which emphasizes country of immigration and country of emigration. Instead, the project is aimed to trace paths of the entire immigration process, in order to capture and reconstruct nonlinear immigration traces, which include relaying, restarting, return, remigration, etc. Thirdly, corresponding to the routine research method, the project views South China-Taiwan-Southeast Asia-South Asia as an integrated organic immigration space. According to the research profession of members in the center, the project proceeds local field researches in the east Guangdong and west Fujian region in mainland China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, East Malaysia, North Sumatra in Indonesia, Singapore, etc. Overall, subprojects of the research are not case studies that can merely intercompare, but also can show the complex immigration paths of Chinese immigrants in South China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, South Asia and related material economy and cultural connection under the framework of the South of Asia.
